 SABOTEURS! Agents hit Russian airfield

Detonations ripped through the night sky at a major Russian airbase near Moscow. When the smoke cleared the base was short two planes and a helicopter. The Russian security organization is sending investigative teams scrambling to find the saboteurs.

While the loss is not by itself a major blow to Russian air power, it marks a new kind of threat that Putin’s forces will have to deal with from hereon.

This is about more than three planes.

This is about:

- How the agents got to the planes;

- Why Russia has never done the same thing themselves; and

- What it means for Russia going forward.

As far as ‘agents on planes’ is concerned, the tactic is unusual. Previously, damage to Russian planes has come from ground-based missiles or aerial drones. The ground-based missiles have been so effective that the Russian Air Force has been absent for most of the invasion of Ukraine. The aerial drones have been equally effective, driving the Russians to experiment with the placement of tires on the wings of parked planes to deter (somehow) drone strikes. The Russians were never clear on how that was supposed to work.

Anyhow…
