A Case Study Is Only As Good As The One Behind It
Thing is, if you’re a junior designer. Your portfolio will look like crap — which comes with the territory.
You see, it’ll take about 2–3 years before your portfolio really has “the look”. The look isn’t following a trend you saw and hoping people will like your portfolio. It’s the full package. When hiring managers or seasoned designers come across your work, they can tell you’re not fresh meat.
I know you want to have a million dollar portfolio that looks like an Apple designer crafted it — but hold your horses.
Most case studies don’t have household names as their case studies. Some won’t even have real companies. Focus on storytelling, adding your personal flair to your portfolio will help you stand out. It’s not about being the loudest in the room, but the most interesting.
Your portfolio is an everchanging canvas. Think of it like a dry erase board. You write, you draw, you erase, you repeat. Each time you make an edit, make sure you’re changing things based on reason rather than reaction.
For one, I was too wordy. My visuals were boring and colorless. I revamped by adding drop shadows to make images pop, interactions to show how functions worked, and improved my storytelling to keep the reader interested.
