Broken Places

Broken Places

It broke Hemingway in 1961 when he put a shotgun in his mouth and killed himself. It broke Hunter S. Thompson in 2005 when he put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger and it has broken a lot more
I don’t think Hemingway could have anticipated the extent to which the world would go to break us and I think he overestimated the resilience of the human spirit. After 2023, a year of extremes, things started going downhill a lot faster, and people who were broken by it never came back.

There had been no significant rainfall in a lot of places across the country. There were ever-increasing areas where there was no more water. There were areas that had been all but abandoned having become unlivable due to a lack of the resources needed to support human habitation.

More diseases were spreading as people gathered together in places that were still marginally livable.
The people at the top had given up any hope of maintaining their position and retreated to their fortified bunkers and camps which would only function temporarily although they did not know that yet.
Since almost everyone was homeless now, the feeble attempts to solve the “problem” that had been tried in 2023 were just thrown out along with any sympathy or compassion that was felt for the unhoused.
