Ethical and Legal Implications of Undisclosed AI Assistance in Scientific Manuscripts





In recent months, a concerning trend has emerged in the world of scientific publishing: the use of large language models like ChatGPT or Bard to (help to) write research manuscripts -even without any proper disclosure. This issue has sparked debates about ethical and legal concerns related to transparency in scientific research, which I perfectly agree with yet think that somehow has balanced too much to the dark side. This essay explores the case of undisclosed AI assistance in one specific scientific paper published (and then retracted) very recently, to highlight the need for greater awareness and adherence to ethical guidelines while also emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive perspective on the use of language models in research.

Exactly one month ago, on August 9 of 2023, the journal Physica Scripta published a paper purporting to solve a complex mathematical equation. However, the paper came under scrutiny when Guillaume Cabanac, a computer scientist at the University of Toulouse, spotted a peculiar phrase: on its third page:
