Is there anybody

 Is there anybody out there?

Dear reader, yes you! It’s been a while. How have you been? I have been through some massive changes in the last few years. The biggest one was moving away from the town I grew up in. We moved about fifty miles away from the place where I spent fifty years. Yes, I know, you’ve probably moved much further and don’t know what the fuss is about, but you’re not me. For me, this was a big deal. I left everything I knew to go to a place where I wasn’t sure I could make it work. It’s been almost a year and I’m still not sure. I am now disabled and not all towns are equal when it comes to the concessions required for people with mobility issues. (For concessions read ‘environments that should automatically exist’, it is the 21st century, after all.)

We managed to move quickly compared to the 17 months our first move took. Our house was on the market in June 2022. We had vacated to a hotel on a Friday at the end of that November and moved into our new house the following Monday. Like many people, we decided to move to the coast. I ruled out rural locations when I saw two people riding their mobility scooters on the road because they had no pavement to use. The last thing I need is to be flattened by some bozo driving too fast for the road that also has me shuffling along it because of a lack of pavement. Where we moved is not the stretch of coastline I’ve frequented over the years. That would have been too awkward and too far for my husband to commute to London. All we had to go on were several day trips to the area to check out not only the house we were buying but also the shops, the healthcare, the cafes and restaurants.

It all seemed viable. After all, we were only moving from one part of Kent to another part of Kent. Our son could commute to the nearby university by bus (when they bother to turn up! I suspect that issue is UK-wide), our daughter is completing a master’s degree with the Open University which is therefore from home. My husband mostly works from home, and I have a business I run from home.

The venture has not been without its difficulties, one is my mobility. I walk
