Why there will be little junior UX jobs for a while
It was an absolutely radical statement to make, and with my newfound large following on Medium, I am extra cautious of what I write and how I write them. And so the radical statement stayed a draft, but was re-used to be my prompt for this article. Why is the UX hype dead? Well, let’s start with the most obvious signal in the market: The ongoing lack of junior UX roles. The over-saturation of the UX market is one of the top complaints of aspirants wanting to join the industry. Many struggle to get ahead of the competition and actually get jobs, so it to many’s disappointment that the initial friendliness of the industry was but a facade.
The real pathway to professional UX design is almost war; some have tried to join UX for more than 2 years, gradually reducing their expectations of the role and eventually giving up altogether. Seasoned design professionals in the space have been on defense mode, securing their positions at companies and staying put in the midst of the dreaded Tech Winter. Design leadership and management have been stealthily ramping up their hiring standards, putting in place choice policies to ensure high standards in their hires and ensure longevity in their design practice.
