How to Lose a Guy in 10 Ways

When it comes to dating, I am terrible.

It’s honestly a laugh that I write about relationships and sexuality for a living, because I am the worst when it comes to dating.

I have never really prided myself on being what one would deem as a great girlfriend. Rife with abandonment issues from a father who claimed I didn’t exist and a mother that would leave me with random relatives for days on end, it wasn’t until I was in my early thirties that I realized what a healthy, loving relationship looked like.

So many times, I would start to see a guy and think to myself, ‘This is great! We are great! This can be a real thing!’ only to find some way to ruin it before it even got off the ground. Looking back at the many, many failed relationships I have under my belt, there were always commonalities in why it didn’t work out.

Talking to some of my guy friends throughout the years about my relationship woes, they quickly could point out what had led to my relationships’ early demise. We would chat and talk about what girls did that made them run the other direction and why these things made them feel that they didn’t want to commit. Suddenly, I saw that it wasn’t just me that was making these mistakes, but it was actually pretty common amongst the women my friends were dating, too.

When I was younger and watched Sex and the City, I never understood the character of Charlotte. She wanted so desperately to find her husband that she would jump to thinking that every man she met would be her soulmate. I use to make fun of her because I was so obviously a Carrie, I mean, I’m a writer.
