A Five Decade Journey of Nature Photography

I paused a minute before I started writing this article on Medium.

I typed the title and then hit the “enter key.”

A plus sign appeared with a light gray prompt reading, “Tell your story…”

I had to giggle and then I smiled.

It would take pages and pages to write my story about my journey as a bird/nature photographer and all the gratitude I have for the many countless hours and days I have experienced capturing images of wildlife through my lens. Not to mention the accumulated treasure trove of cherished memories from the experiences that have left an incredible mark on my life.

My status as a native Floridian has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in fostering my passion for bird photography. Florida, with its rich biodiversity boasting more than 500 distinct bird species, continually expanding, offers an unparalleled opportunity for observation and documentation. This impressive variety of avian life is readily accessible to bird lovers, nature lovers and photographers like me.Our favorable climate and abundant water sources provide an ideal habitat for the thriving bird population. Moreover, the geographic location makes it an alluring pit stop for migratory birds passing through, offering birdwatchers and photographers alike the chance to witness awe-inspiring moments. So here I am, starting to tell my story on this newfound platform, Medium. I am a person of simplicity and love minimalism and this space offers a canvas perfect for writers and storytellers. A tranquil space where my narratives can unfurl without any distraction. A blank whiteboard upon which I can paint my lifetime memories in words and images.

Up until now I have kept most of my stories to myself. mainly to protect the birds and wildlife. Not revealing their whereabouts and locations. Right or wrong it was important to me that their lives were not encroached on and I felt I had no right to expose them. But now, I want to share.
