Preserving Memories

Preserving Memories: Journaling, Sharing, and Storytelling

You know, it’s become quite common knowledge that ever since the Covid pandemic hit, there’s been this surge in interest when it comes to bird watching. It’s fascinating to see how more and more newspapers and publications are featuring stories about folks who’ve suddenly developed a deep fascination for the world of birds.

I’ve noticed that bird cams have practically doubled in number, and there’s been a significant uptick in the number of bird photos being shared on various bird-watching websites. It’s like the avian world has really taken the center stage.

What’s even more wonderful to see is the positive impact that this birding trend has had on our economy over the past few years, and it’s still on the upswing. It’s growing faster and larger, especially in the aftermath of Covid, which is quite remarkable.

Personally, I’ve been a Professional Bird Photographer for a good 50 years now, and let me tell you, my heart skips a beat when I hear the majestic call of a hawk in flight or the haunting cry of an eagle flying overhead. And don’t get me started on the melodious tunes of migratory songbirds returning for the season — those moments are simply pure magic to me. I love it when the Warblers come through and perch on the trees, looking for food to fill their small bellies. In an article by Gillian Flaccus, he interviewed, a 25-year-old law student Conner Brown in which Brown stated, “The world of birds is so much more vibrant and active than I’d ever realized, and once I paid attention, it just hit me in the face,” Brown said. “It’s given me a reason to get out of the house, it’s motivated me.”

And he is right. Birding is an adventure to get people moving and get them out of the house. The hobby or profession is addicting and can be very enjoyable for the entire family.

Ask Julia Zarankin, the author of Field Notes from an Unintentional Birder. She stumbled into the birding bird unexpectedly and shares her adventure and transition into a bird watcher with us.
