Factors Affecting the English Proficiency of a Person
An individual who has the mastery of the English language is titled as English proficient. According to an article made by UniSq (2023) being proficient in English means to freely use the language to create and interact meaning in spoken and written context while completing their program of study.
It said that there are several factors affecting one’s progress on attaining a certain level of proficiency such as:
- Motivation
MotivatiZn is a focal aspect on synthesizing success rate of any difficult activity. (Alizadeh, 2016). In a study made by Castro (2018) revealed that the more positive attitude the students have onto the English language, the more motivated they will be on learning the English. In lined with this is a research made by Pangket (2019) says that the major reason affecting the proficiency of the students are lacking motivation and vocabulary, enunciation, and grammar mastery. Uninterested, narrow vocabulary scope, and training are the factors that demotivate the pupils in leaning English.
- Attitude
Emotions are one of many that contribute to an individual’s progress onto achieving something as certain emotions will reflect certain outcome towards his framework. The way an individual enhances his linguistic skills is influenced by attitude that he process either to a target language or culture. (Montero et al., 2014)
- Usage of teaching materials
There are multiple ways for an instructor to effectively teach the English language such as using different teaching materials. Abebe and Davidson (2012) ruled out that students are more willing to learn vocabulary with the aid of visual materials since it strengthens the students ability and opportunity to use the English language for conveying ideas and feelings. Matthew and Alidmat (2013) also ruled out that audio-visuals help students learn language better than a normal learning method.
- English teachers/instructors skills and competence.
Teachers contribute to the development of a student (Michael F and Andy. H, 2013). They provide sets of learning materials, they assess the student’s performance, and they must create truly learners centered classroom (Richards et al., 2014). Teachers are the major factors affecting the growth of an individual. Students will not be able to improve in the English language when they are taught by incompetent mentors.
