Railway to Annexation: Russia’s New Track in Donetsk Spells Desperation!

The unspoken game of geopolitics has a new, riveting chapter. News has emerged that Russia is constructing a railway line in the Donbas region, connecting it faster to the occupied south of Ukraine and, by extension, Crimea. No longer content to rely solely on the precarious Crimean Bridge, the move displays Russia’s ambition to fortify its logistic footholds in Ukraine.

Piotr Andriushchenko, an advisor to the mayor of Mariupol, was among the first to highlight this development. The project is beyond the talking phase, he says. A railway bridge is under construction near the village of Granitnoye over the Kalmius River. When complete, the railway would link Russian cities like Taganrog and Rostov-on-Don directly with Mariupol, Volnovaha, and Donetsk in Ukraine.

But why should this matter? It matters immensely. This isn’t just another rail line. It’s a lifeline. The new route would substantially cut Russia’s dependency on the Crimean Bridge, which currently serves as the principal channel for transporting equipment and troops to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
