Salary Distributions in 2023 for the 25+ Most Popular Programming Languages
Does the choice of programming language affect your salary?
It certainly looks that way when you compare salary distributions for different programming languages using the latest StackOverflow Developer Survey.
To pass on that information to you, I’ve created a beautiful data visualization that I hope you enjoy.
Let’s dive right in.
I’ve created a box plot showing the salary distribution for the most popular programming languages in the survey.
To compare apples with apples, I’m only looking at full-time developers located in the United States.Instead of using mean and standard deviation, I plot the median salary with the 10th and 90th percentiles.
That way, I don’t let irrelevant individuals with extremely high salaries skew the distribution or visualization.
There are apparent differences between the languages where Objective-C, Go, Scala, and Elixir have a median salary of over $175,000.
Some languages, like Assembly, have a lower median but a more elongated distribution where the 90th percentile is at the very top.
VBA and .Net have a much lower median than all other languages, and that’s true for their percentiles as well.
I only included programming languages with more than 150 respondents, so if you’re missing one, that’s why.
Your choice of language is not what decides your salary, but it’s good to know that some languages tend to pay more than others.
So, take these numbers with a grain of salt.
Thank you for reading, and see you next time! :)
