The Power Of Community

Mountain Climbing In A Wheelchair And The Power Of Community

Rolling through this incredible journey of life on wheels, I’ve often found myself immersed in moments of struggles and triumphs. My wheelchair has brought with it not only challenges but also countless heartfelt moments, all thanks to the power of my loving support networks.

I can still remember the days following my transition to a wheelchair. I have always had my condition but I steadily became weaker during my childhood. Each day rolled into the next and I gradually lost hope that I would be able to recapture my old life.My little cousin insisted on decorating my chair with a rainbow of cute stickers, calling it my “superhero chair,” her contagious joy making the whole room light up with laughter. I still have her stickers on my chair all these years later that I can look at when I’m feeling a bit down in the dumps.

My parents would stay up late researching ways to make every nook and cranny of our home accessible to me. The initial days were steeped in uncertainty. Slowly we got the hang of doing the same things but a bit differently.

They installed a hoist in my bedroom. Heck, they knocked down the walls in their own hallway so my wheelchair could squeeze through and grant me the freedom to get outside. It was this daily dosage of love that dissolved the chains of fear and fostered a newfound resilience within me.My little cousin insisted on decorating my chair with a rainbow of cute stickers, calling it my “superhero chair,” her contagious joy making the whole room light up with laughter.
