 The Value Of Human Kindness

My motivation for composing this article is based upon recent positive experiences. It’s also poignant during these troubled times to read something about human kindness. More often than not, mainstream and social media focuses on poor services and customer service. Last week, my wife and I have returned from a night out, feeling very happy. This was partly due to the entertainment, but also because we encountered staff whose friendly manners helped make our day.

My wife and I are both in our mid 60s. We live in a village and seldom venture out to big cities. My wife has MS and walks with the aid of either sticks or a rollator. Any visit to somewhere new is stressful. ‘Do we know where we are going? How far do I have to walk? Will I be able to sit down somewhere?’ What appears a simple trip to most can be a scary adventure for her. I wouldn’t describe either of us as clueless, but planning a trip out to events in a big city does take us out of our comfort zone. Therefore, prior to the occasion, we were a bit anxious and nervous.

The night out involved a rock concert. We went to a big gig with thousands of people! This required driving across country to a big city — Glasgow. We had to work out how to park, negotiate ourselves from the car park to the arena and find ourselves safely to our seats. Given my wife walks a maximum of 200 yards before tiring, and gets anxious with unfamiliar settings, this therefore became an expedition. Our evening turned out to be a pleasure from start to finish.

We entered the multi-storey car park adjacent the arena. As soon as the first car park attendant at the entrance saw we had a blue badge, he directed us to the bottom corner, nearest the lift and arena. A second attendant was on hand to direct us into a space next the lift. This all came with smiles and courtesy.

The next issue was entering the arena. There was no seating in the foyer. Not one, but two security guards approached my wife to offer assistance. As soon as she asked if there was any seating, to which there was none, one of them went away and fetched a chair for her. We then were shown to our seats, and where to find accessible toilets. All staff acted jolly and told us they were there to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. As a…
